June 22nd Update

By: Shane Alfreds

I am now back in Vancouver after leaving Ucluelet by bus yesterday. It was a tough decision, but I needed to get back home to the real world. I really enjoyed sailing the first eight legs and it seemed like a good time for me to leave for home. The multihull sailors are a great group (not saying that monohuller's aren't too) and everyone wished me well and were sad to see me go.

It looks like there was good wind for the start this morning judging by the photos on the official site. As of 4pm the weather report for the Juan de Fuca called for Westerly 15 to 20 knots rising to 20 to 30 early this evening. Then easing to 15 overnight and rising to 25 again tomorrow afternoon. It should be a good ride for all the boats and most will be in tonight or early in the AM hours.

As the Cheekee Monkee's professional web developer, I took a look at the usage statistics so far during the race. On average we've had 164 visitors per day with a high set on June 15th of 238. There have been 2106 average page views per day and 7704 hits. This is a big increase as the usual average of visitors is in the 30 to 40 per day range.

I'll continue to update the site as the crew sends me their reports. The leg 9 report should be up by early tomorrow evening.

Anyone out there that has some good photos or video from the race, I'd really like to get a copy of them. You can contact me here to either send me jpg's or ask for my address if you could send them on a CD. Thanks so much.
