March 29 & 30th – Sydney BC.

Crew: Kim, Ashlyn, Rob, Paul, Raymond and Dave

We started off the race in good wind, clear air, crossing the line. We were going around 10- 12 knots around the first mark, up to Turn Point. A few miles off of Patos Island, we lost wind around 5:00 PM. As we slowly made our way around Patos Island, going around 3 knots, we took a rock on the foil! Which did some unseen damage at the time. Although it did not affect our racing too much, other than no longer being able to raise or move the foil.

We continued our crawl around the island and down towards South Pender Island. Dealing with challenging light winds to no wind and opposing currents. All of the faster boats in the long course had bunched up around Canoe Rock, which was where it became a snail race, who could find the best light breeze in the dark night. After making our way to the Pellow Islet Buoy, the wind picked up, and all the boats had a nice breeze towards the finish line. We crossed the line third at 1:13 AM.

On Sunday morning, the delivery back to Vancouver, we noticed the foil had decided to bend into a J-Foil! As we were motoring along, the foil danced up and down in the water and managed to stay attached. When we hit the Strait, the wind picked up and we were off sailing 12-15 knots. We didn’t lose our upgraded J-foil until we were nearing Vancouver.
